First question: why another Catholic apologetic website? When I think of why we began this website it seems to be for the youth first of all. As a teacher, parent, uncle and again a teacher (as an artist & writer), much of my focus audience when expressing anything has been younger people. This has been both willing and unwilling, but nevertheless a fact. Young people who are and who are not Catholics have often never gotten the chance to hear the truth about the original Church of Christ, the one he himself founded. Too often our teaching methods seem to have been developed without the interests of the mind of the student considered or with it considered too much. The first, often seen in Catholic materials, results in something to which the student really has no reason to relate. The second leads to something that invariably seems slightly too young for the young person and therefore comes off as "lame." The same result occurs from similar attempts to be relateable to any age group, to be "cool."
The term "youth" above includes young adults in their 20s and early 30s and perhaps the situation described can be true for almost any age group. First of all, few of us totally lose our capacity to feel the way we felt as younger adults. We still have certain things that are cool to us. When others from the outside, with their own motives, try to relate through those things (our things) we seem to resent it as contrived, not genuine and "lame." Many people have the same reaction that I have when anyone, who is not me, tries to relate to me in what they think of as my interests. Its hard enough to connect successfully when people, who are trying to relate, know each other well. Remember trying to reach your kids on their level? Remember when your parents tried that with you. Yeh, how did that work out? Well, probably sometimes pretty good but often not so good. That's because we're not dumb. When people do that, we know that there is another goal or message, another agenda. So, . . . I'm smart, just get to the message. You can relate it to my world, during the discussion, by tossing in an appropriate metaphor here or there. It makes sense to try to relate then (during the body of the discussion) when the particular point or subject is unfamiliar to the audience.
So, we thought of young people first, but we want to speak to all who don't know Catholicism. The misconceptions concerning the Church are almost rampant, odd considering it is the oldest expression of Christianity. One would certainly expect it to be the most familiar. We are believers in Catholicism, so we will tell you in the beginning that we are going to give you our positive view of the Church. We will back up that view point with the evidence we have, and you can make up your own mind.
This website will express the Catholic Faith's concepts in clear and plain language and examples. The "what" will be named and described followed by the clearest logical explanation of the"why." We've all had our journey of quest and we know why people doubt spiritual things. Yes Christianity is built upon faith, but God knows we need some evidence. He's the one who gave us the gift of the inquisitive mind.
Note: The writers on this site tend to often speak & write in casual, often folksy ways. We like to write and speak like we think, somewhat extemporaneously, but with some reflection. So if we come off as lame, it is genuine lameness.
